It's a Who-sapaloosa!

Ok, so remember when I posted that video of Orbital tearing it up at Glastonbury with their version of the Dr. Who theme? Well, I got two more theme interpretations for you, both done by fans.

First, the rock version:

<lj-embed id="152" />

And next, a version that combines Orbital and the original (for this season) orchestral theme, giving me goosebumps in the process:

<lj-embed id="153" />

And for all of your fan-geek-remix needs, check out Whomix, a place where people bravely sacrifice their social lives in the pursuit of really, really fan-frickin'-tastic interpretations of an iconic TV theme. (Check out Whorhythmics, Spaghetti Who, Doctor Quien, Downtempo, Planet of the Evil Dub, Swamp Doctor and the obligatory 80s Remix.) I just wish I could figure out how to download them, if possible.

It's not insomnia, by the way. It's musicophilia.

The things you come across on the job

I've never wondered what Damien Dempsey would sound like if he dropped the guitar, picked up a mic and insisted on putting the letters "MC" or "DJ" before his last name, but I've just had the question answered for me.

I...am not quite sure how to feel about this. It's just...weird.

The best course of action in this case may be to consult with Boy and get his opinion.*

*Not that I'm incapable of independently forming my own opinions, mind you. (After all, that's what they pay me for.) It's more that he might be able to provide some sort of context, cultural or otherwise. Or at least help my brain to quit going, "BWA WHAAAAAAAAA?"

Things I wish I could do

If I knew how to make animated GIFs, I'd totally love to combine the top two icons here ("Down with this sort of thing." and "Careful now") into an icon that alternated the two. I'd probably use it to replace my current "Doom!" icon, since that one isn't all that cool anyway.

(For those who have no idea what Father Ted is, there's always Blackadder, Dr. Who and Torchwood.)

Don't thank me, by the way.
It is a woodblock print. Get over yourselves.

You know, ridiculous panic like this about what is very obviously supposed to be a throwback to Victorian-era maritime art (er, actually the logo is "based on an old sixteenth-century Norse woodcut" - my bad) makes me wonder how conservative Christians managed to live through all of these centuries without falling prey to outrage-induced heart attacks and/or illness brought on by chronic stress.

Also, what the hell is so damn threatening about the female body that conservatives of any stripe, regardless of religion, feel a need to vilify it?

Get aid to the Burmese people - no junta required

I got this e-mail from a friend of mine yesterday. Rather than re-write what was there, I've decided instead to copy/paste the content here - not only does it save time, but it also sums things up far better than I could. Even if you cannot donate at this time, please feel free to link and/or copy/paste this information in your own journal(s). The more people who know about this, the better. Thank you. (x-posted to itslittlethings)

***

Dear friends,

In the wake of a massive cyclone, a shocking 100,000 Burmese may be dead. More are missing. A million are homeless.

But what's happening in Burma is not just a natural disaster--it's also a catastrophe of bad leadership.

Burma's brutal and corrupt military junta failed to warn the people, failed to evacuate any areas, and suppressed freedom of communication so that Burmese people didn't know the storm was coming when the rest of the world did. Now the government is failing to respond to the disaster and obstructing international aid organizations.

Humanitarian relief is urgently needed, but Burma's government could easily delay, divert or misuse any aid. Yesterday the International Burmese Monks Organization, including many leaders of the democracy protests last fall, launched a new effort to provide relief through Burma's powerful grass roots network of monasteries--the most trusted institutions in the country and currently the only source of housing and support in many devastated communities. Click below to help the Burmese people with a donation and see a video appeal to Avaaz from a leader of the monks:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/burma_cyclone/15.php

Giving to the monks is a smart, fast way to get aid directly to Burma's people. Governments and international aid organizations are important, but face challenges--they may not be allowed into Burma, or they may be forced to provide aid according to the junta's rules. And most will have to spend large amounts of money just setting up operations in the country. The monks are already on the front lines of the aid effort--housing, feeding, and supporting the victims of the cyclone since the day it struck. The International Burmese Monks Organization will send money directly to each monastery through their own networks, bypassing regime controls.

Last year, more than 800,000 of us around the world stood with the Burmese people as they rose up against the military dictatorship. The government lost no time then in dispatching its armies to ruthlessly crush the non-violent democracy movement--but now, as tens of thousands die, the junta's response is slow and threatens to divert precious aid into the corrupt regime's pockets.

The monks are unlikely to receive aid from governments or large humanitarian organizations, but they have a stronger presence and trust among the Burmese people than both. If we all chip in a little bit, we can help them to make a big difference. Click here to donate:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/burma_cyclone/15.php

With hope,

Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Paul, Iain, Veronique, Pascal, Galit and the whole Avaaz team

PS: Here are some links to more information:

For more information about Avaaz's work to support the Burmese people, click here:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/burma_report_back

For more information about the cyclone, the humanitarian crisis, and the political dimension, see these articles:

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/PoliticsNation/IMD_issued_specific_and_precise_advisories_to_Myanmar_IMD/articleshow/3016493.cms
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/08/myanmar/?iref=mpstoryview
http://www.irrawaddy.org/opinion_story.php?art_id=11836
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/07/world/asia/07aid.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7385205.stm

"I want my notebook."

I had a dream last night that the comics I put on eBay sold for a whopping $75. As fab as that would be, I'm currently giving the project a <strike>snowball's chance in Hell</strike> a low probability of bringing in anywhere near that amount. Frankly, I'm confused - you'd think that people would want to bid on it, given that the opening bid is about 1/3 what the collection could/should be worth. (The individual books are currently selling for $10 apiece on Amazon.com.) How much do you want to bet that if it was something ridiculous and banal that it would already have 20 or so bids on it?

I wait impatiently for the day that America discovers culture, intellect and reason. Which means I should probably run away and join the steampunk movement. Odd that it seems more DIY, more romantic, and more progressive than mainstream punk and/or the hippie movement these days. I've always thought it interesting that things like wind power and natural vegetable soaps have strong roots in the past; many of today's green solutions are just the rediscovery and refining of old technologies. It makes me curious about the possibility of a green movement within this subculture.

But then, I'm probably severely over-thinking all of this.

In a completely mundane aside, the drain in my bathroom is currently running slow, and I'm thinking that there must be build-up along the walls of the pipes. I tried using drain cleaner as a last resort a few weeks ago (trust me - I really, really didn't want to), but it did absolutely nothing for the problem. What has helped is hot water and washing soda, which leads me to believe that it is some sort of grease/gunk build-up in the pipes, most likely from soap. However, the soda hasn't completely eliminated the problem, which is why I really feel the need to try out one of the new TerraCycle products, Drain Maintainer. I like the idea of an all-natural, non-toxic product that technically works constantly, especially since I only have to add a cup of it once a month. Thing is, I have no idea where to buy it - there is a place on the website where you can see where TerraCycle is sold, but it doesn't say which products are sold at which stores. It also doesn't look like you can buy the stuff online. Has anyone seen this at any chain stores?

The weekend ended up being pretty darn cool. Friends came, we went on a walking tour of Ann Arbor proper, and we gave the now-Oprah-famous Zingerman's a big ol' chunk of our business. Fortunately, there was much walking on Saturday. Unfortunately, I still ended up feeling like these two unfortunate souls - surrounded on all sides by good food, but confronted with the possibility of either becoming overly stuffed or killed to death by beautiful, decadent things. Which is a nice way of saying that the food kicked a ridiculous amount of ass, but I'm sort of surprised I'm still alive and fitting into my pants.

It Has Not Been A Good Morning

-Meant to wake up at 7:00 at the latest this morning so I could get to work early and leave early. Naturally, I sleep in and get to work at my normal time. After skipping breakfast.

-Apartment is still a wreck. At this point, I'll have just under two hours to clean up my bedroom, wash the sheets on my bed, vaccuum, make rice and clean the kitchen before my guests arrive. I would have had more time if I'd been able to get my ass out of bed earlier, but that would take all the fun out of making this a five for five hell week.

-No time to grind coffee. No time to get some at the bakery, which means both coffee and something for breakfast is out. Then again, I'm currently stressed to the point that the thought of food makes me nauseous, so that's one bright spot.

-Skipping lunch. The only way I'll get out of here by 5:15 is if I don't break, not even for 15 minutes. Wish me luck as I attempt to pound out three reviews and six artist profiles while having a psychedelic low blood sugar experience.

-Wouldn't mind having an adult beverage (and it would be just one, theycallmeboy ) once this damn day is over, but the guests in question are teetotalers. Out of respect for them, I abstain in their presence, since it would appear that such activities are frowned upon by them. (In contrast, my mom has made me a few after work mercy stress drinks in my day.) This means I'll have to wait until Sunday night before I can slow down the mental processes enough to maintain at least some semblance of being a sane, contributing member of society.

-Once in a very great while, I get cramps that center not only in the lower abdomen, but also shoot into the upper parts of my legs. It's a hereditary thing, as it happens to my mother as well. Fortunately, it only happens once in a blue moon. And it's chosen to happen now. Fan-fucking-tabulous.

So in other words, this is going to be a very interesting 72 hours.

Guys, this could be a LOT of fun

It looks like the Fred Phelps Hate Machine will be in my general vicinity tomorrow. Fortunately, there is a genius plan in place to twist this around into something positive. No, no, come back. Just stay with me, 'kay?

Ok, here's the deal - according to this post:

Kate Brindle, Program Coordinator of the LGBTRC, and Dan Burns, Chair of the LGBTRC Advisory Committee, will each pledge $2.00 for every minute Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are protesting on EMU’s (Eastern Michigan University) campus to raise money for the LGBT Emergency Fund which provides financial assistance for EMU students who encounter immediate financial hardship do to issues surrounding sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

But wait, it gets better! You - yes, you, my friends - can get in on the fun as well! Just go to this online pledge form, enter what you'd like to pledge per minute (so be careful with your amounts), then count down to the Zero Hour of tomorrow, May 9, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Though no one wants to see them spend even a second dispensing their vile, filthy, ugly hate, at least this time around, something good will come of it. And won't they be thrilled to tears when they find out?

Even if you can't donate due to budget constraints (like myself at the moment), please feel free to pass this along to interested parties in any way you see fit. We certainly don't want to leave anyone out, you know?

Well, an e-mail just went around the office saying that there were tickets available for The Swell Season (the show I was desperate to see on May 10). I have friends coming in this weekend, and was hoping that by some miracle, there would be three tickets available.

There are two.

The Universe seems intent on telling me, "THOU SHALL NOT SEE INCREDIBLE IRISH MUSICIANS, FOR THOU ART NOT WORTHY."

Man, I totally cannot wait for this week to be over.

Fail Plan is Ded

So, after learning that my first plan could possibly see me charged with discouraging morality and getting no feedback as to the best course of action, I did what I should have done in the first place and plunked the lot on eBay. Opening bid is $20, which sounds high until you realize that it's for six books, each of which are going for $9.99 on Amazon.

If there are no takers after 10 days, I'll have to take my chances with a used bookstore. I'm reluctant to do that; my one foray into selling books at a brick and mortar saw me carting in dozens of books and several rare CDs, only to be told after an hour or so of waiting that the entire lot - of over 30 books - would net me just under $20. Or, as they were so smug in telling me, just under $20 in store credit. Lesson learned. I will never sell through them again.

Not that I think I'd get any more from a local seller, but at least they won't be jerks about it.

Anyway, here's hoping I get a vaguely decent price for everything, as I'd feel like an idiot in handing over less than the books were originally worth.

Paved with good intentions

It seems that the one sentence that best describes my life is, "Grandiose ideas that turn to folly rather than come to fruition."

After being advised that my attempt at a raffle could be construed as heading up a session of illegal gambling,1 I've decided that it will have to either be eBay or my nearest brick and mortar comic/book store. Does anyone have any advice about which would be more likely to make more money? (I ask because I seem to have horrible eBay karma - the only way I've ever gotten anyone to bid on/buy any of my stuff was to list either the opening bid or the Buy It Now price (or both) for an absurdly low amount. Anything more (and we're talking in the reasonable range) doesn't even get viewed.

1And for those saying, "But that's in Texas!" there are two issues. First, I have no idea if my state has the same sorts of regulations, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to pour through state, county and city legal codes to find out. Secondly, if a Texan won, they could possibly get in trouble for participating. Given that this was supposed to be an easy, fun process, there's really no reason for me to pursue the idea any longer.

Genius or folly, I know not which

Back when I worked at OldJob, one of my fellow employees was instrumental as a friend, mentor, and someone who kept me from going absolutely batty due to unrealistically high levels of stress. We had differing opinions on just about everything - religion, politics, culture, even music - but he was always tremendously respectful and kind. Now he needs help, and I want to see what I can do for him.

As you can see from reading through his LJ, he's currently preparing for a mission trip to Bolivia. I know this sort of thing is a touchy and/or dicey subject for some people, but I know this guy well enough to know that his trip isn't going to be a "Bibles Before Bread" sort of deal - yes, there will be some worship and such going on, but it would appear that this will be taking place with a pre-existing congregation; as far as I know, they won't be converting anyone. The main thrust of the trip is to go down there and help the community, which is something I can get behind.

Thing is, he needs to raise money for this to happen. He's not a rich guy.

To that end, I have volumes 1-6 of Bone trade paperbacks that this guy gave me a while back. They're mine to do with as I please, so I thought I'd use them to help out my friend. I was going to put them on eBay at first, but then I had an idea - why not a raffle?

Here's how it would work: people enter the raffle by leaving a comment on my blog and sending me $10 via PayPal. From there, their names (or rather, LJ handles) are put into a hat (there will be pictures, so as to prove that the raffle took place, hence the need for LJ names for privacy), one of which will be drawn at random. The lucky winner gets all six volumes for $10 - a real steal, given that I was hoping to get at least $50 for them on eBay. I'm hoping that at least five people would play, as I'd feel silly in just giving my friend $10.

Anyway, I wanted to see what the Great and Powerful Internets had to say about all of this. Good idea? Bad idea? I'll need to get on with this soon, as my friend will be leaving soon.

What say you?

Adding to my Amazon Wish List makes me feel shallow and materialistic...

...but doesn't actually stop me from adding stuff to it.

I desperately need to have this music pouring out of my windows all summer, so I added it to my ridiculously long Wish List - the same one that reminds me that despite my desire (and ongoing attempts) to consume less in the name of environmental stewardship, I am actually a shameless music/world culture fanatic.

Also, a bad, bad educated liberal Westerner.
For the fashion inclined and appliance deprived

I have to admit to not knowing much about daytime TV (partially because I'm not around in the morning to watch it, and mostly because women's morning shows in America seem to run under the assumption that we have an average IQ of 70 and think on a looped circuit of fashion, weight loss, and how to spice up our love life), but I will say that I like Kelly Ripa. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a fan - I know precious little about her - but she doesn't seem forced or falsely perky, and that's always a relief. I still remember the time she was on SNL, and though I can't remember the sketches, I do remember that I was impressed by her comedic timing.

Anyway, I recently found out about a contest that centers around Kelly Ripa - or more accurately, her handbags. Basically, you go to the Electrolux Appliances website, click on the ad for the "Kelly's Bags" contest, register, and follow clues each day as to where she's hidden her bag(s) on the Internets. Collect the bag(s), then match them to outfits and go to events - you score more points if you match the right bag(s) with the right outfit(s). (I would lose horribly, because when asked what bag to use for what occasion in real life, I ALWAYS answer, "The one that holds the most stuff, especially my good headphones." That said, I would love to see theycallmeboy review this for Big Mean Flash Gamer, because in addition to his snark and keen observations, he and I also have approximately the same concept of style and fashion - that is to say, centered on comfort, practicality, and utilitarianism - so we'd have a good laugh over the fact that he picked the biggest bag too.)

So, what's in it for you if you win? It's actually one of ten Electrolux kitchen appliance suites, which is a pretty awesome prize. However, this is what I consider to be the most impressive bit about the whole shebang:

"Electrolux will join Kelly in supporting the OCRF through a series of online promotions and through a portion of sales on select retail appliances. We plan to raise more than $500,000 over the next two years. Electrolux will make a $1 donation (with a minimum of $40,000 and a maximum of $45,000) to the OCRF (www.ocrf.org) for every eligible person who registers to play." - from the website

So even if you don't win, you're helping throw some money toward a truly worthy cause. And hey - since our leaders are busy liberating Iraq through shopping malls and condos, it looks like it's up to the rest of us to fund vital medical research.

The Triumphant Return of FRIDAY ROCKS!

Due to a scheduling conflict, our company had its Cinco de Mayo party today. This means I'm not longer craving junk food, but I think I've also reached critical mass. There will be no need to eat for days. Blug.

Anyway, I've decided that the time has come to resurrect a time-honored tradition on this here blog - FRIDAY ROCKS! That's right - five videos featuring only the best music by the finest artists, all centered around a theme of my choosing. Given the occasion, I've decided to go with Mexican and Mexican-American musicians. It's not just flamenco and mariachis, kids! Enjoy!

Rodrigo y Gabriella
<lj-embed id="142" />

Los Lobos
<lj-embed id="143" />

Rage Against the Machine (via Zach de la Rocha)
<lj-embed id="144" />

Santana
<lj-embed id="145" />

Joan Baez (with Bob Dylan - he gets a pass today)
<lj-embed id="146" />

What is up with this?

Why the hell have I been craving junk food for the past month? I try not to have it - it's not good for me, it's not good for society, and it makes me feel like crap after eating it - but I want it.

It's not an emotional thing, and I think I get enough calories and such, since I'm not running around hungry all the time. I've been indulging from time to time, always in moderation, so it's not a deprivation thing. What gives?

It's just weird, you know?

Of course.

Seven Songs

You can all blame onceupon for this. She posted an entry featuring the whole, "What seven songs are you listening to right now?" meme, and invited anyone to participate. Anyone who's read this journal long enough knows that I see this as an excuse to geek, so you're stuck with this on your flist. Again, it's not voluntary! I was coerced!

All songs listed feature commentary and a video, each behind a cut to spare your flists. If anyone else wants to participate, feel free to rock it. Yeah.

Seven Songs

1. Public Image Limited - Rise
<lj-embed id="135" />
Since the very beginning of our friendship that turned into true love, theycallmeboy has been filling me in about all the great punk music I've overlooked over the years. I was initially surprised, then extremely delighted to find that punk has a strong tradition of social activism. (Prior to this, the only "punks" I'd encountered were the angry kids in high school who listened to the music and wore the clothes, but couldn't really tell you what it all meant, except that you were pissed off about everything.) As we were discussing our love of The Clash and how we both prefered them to The Sex Pistols, Conor mentioned that Johnny Rotten eventually moved on, went by his given name (John Lydon*) and formed another band, Public Image Limited (PiL), that had a lot more to say than the Pistols ever did. I have to admit that I was skeptical - not to mention that Rotten/Lydon freaked me out with his aggression and dead-eye stare - so I didn't actively seek them out. Then Conor posted this video on his MySpace page, and I immediately regretted my hesitation. There's a quiet determination and dignity in this song that grabs me; for some reason, it reminds me of the many talks I have with Conor about the long march in fighting for what we believe in, as well as the times that we've turned our words into deeds, either separately or together. The slow burn energy is beautifully augmented by Lydon's performance in the video, where his stare (apparently one of the lasting effects of a tough battle with spinal meningitis) seems to ask the viewer, "What are you fighting for?" Even without the video, it's still a gripping powerful song. If I had a band, I'd insist on covering it.

*Holy crap - his name is John Joseph Lydon? Honey, if you're reading this, take note - not only will we be naming our first son after our fathers AND John Lennon and Joe Strummer, but we'll also be inadvertently naming him after yet another rock pioneer. He'll be the most punk rock kid EVER!

2. Orbital - Dr. Who?
<lj-embed id="136" />

I'll admit it - I'm a sucker for good TV show themes. While I've always had a dim awareness about Dr. Who, it wasn't until I started seeing pictures of David Tennant that I started to get interested. The previous Doctors all seemed a bit too reserved and stodgy for me (kick-ass scarves notwithstanding), but this Doctor was brash, young, full of childlike wonder, but also piercingly intelligent. And cute. Dim awareness then turned into mild curiosity, but it wasn't until I heard the show's theme that I knew it was something I had to check out. Anything that sounds this cool as an electronica remix? Very yes.

3. The Thieving Magpie
<lj-embed id="137" />

I've been on a Ren and Stimpy kick this past week (another TV series with brilliant music/music editing), and as such downloaded a bundle of the stock production music used in the series. Though this song isn't a stock piece (it's a classical composition), it somehow ended up in there, which is fine by me. The first time I heard it, I knew it was probably as close as I'd ever get to personal theme music. It's intellectual-sounding, pleasantly lush, and subtly ridiculous. Just like me. Or something.

4. Bullet For My Valentine - Hearts Burst Into Fire
<lj-embed id="138" />

Last year was best described as a trial by fire, what with an extremely stressful job, a loss of confidence in my abilities, and the one person I trusted enough to open up to about my inner turmoil being approximately 3,500 miles away. Is it any wonder why I played (and wept to) U2's "All I Want Is You" on a weekly basis? Fortunately, 2008 has brought me a renewed sense of hope and optimism (thanks to the fantastic NewJob), and that, coupled with the mutual promise that Conor and I will be together despite the odds, has led to a particular attachment to this, one of the most tender metal songs I've ever heard. Conor's coming home to me on May 31. Expect this to be in heavy rotation in the meantime.

5. Mindless Self Indulgence - Shut Me Up
<lj-embed id="139" />

It's bizzare. It's wildly hyperactive. The video is darkly humorous and directed by the incomparable Jhonen Vasquez. I can't get enough. It makes me want to put my hair in pigtails and jump up and down on my bed while I sing along in a silly, exaggerated cartoon voice.

6. Donovan - Wear Your Love Like Heaven
<lj-embed id="140" />

It's spring, which means I'm busting out with the peasant blouses (and jonesing to check out thrift stores for more). It also means that I'm getting my psychedelic pop/rock on, including Donovan. I'm definitely a seasonal music listener, so there will be plenty of this sort of thing pouring out of my windows on weekends. Just as theycallmeboy is educating me about punk, I'm helping him learn about the 60s/70s psychedelic and hard/blues rock scenes. It's a lot of fun for both of us, though I don't think he's at quite my pseudo-hippie level. Yet. ;)

7. Bang Camaro - Push Push (Lady Lightning)
<lj-embed id="141" />

And next, to completely negate the above sentiment, I give you Bang Camaro, a collective of musicians who, like me, are closet hair metal fans. (Their AMG bio is here.) My love for this band completely exposes my NEO roots, but frankly, I don't care. It's big, fun music that's been pushed to 11 by guys who know that the only thing that matters in this genre is a) the riff, and b) the chorus. My love of music like this (see also "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Pour Some Sugar On Me," and "Love In An Elevator") pretty much guarantees that I will be scorned by every feminist on the planet, but I can't help myself. If singing along with arena rock refrains is wrong, I don't want to be right.
